Why You Should Never Ignore a High Fever During the Monsoon

Why You Should Never Ignore a High Fever During the Monsoon

Why You Should Never Ignore a High Fever During the Monsoon is an important topic because the rainy season can bring an increased risk of several infections. In India, changing weather, waterlogging, contaminated water, and mosquito breeding can contribute to illnesses such as dengue, malaria, typhoid, and other infections. A high fever may be a sign that the body is fighting an infection, and ignoring it can delay the right treatment. Knowing the warning signs and seeking medical advice at the right time can help prevent complications.

Why Is a High Fever During the Monsoon a Serious Concern?

A fever is usually a sign that the body is responding to an infection or another medical condition. During the monsoon, people may develop fever due to mosquito-borne diseases, waterborne infections, respiratory infections, and other causes.

A temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or above is generally considered a fever. However, the seriousness of an illness cannot be judged by temperature alone. A person with a moderate fever may have a serious infection, while another person with a high temperature may recover without complications.

A persistent or high fever, especially when accompanied by severe headache, repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, breathing difficulty, or extreme weakness, needs prompt medical attention. Do not wait for several days if the symptoms are worsening.

Common Causes of High Fever During the Monsoon

1. Dengue Fever

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can spread through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and skin rash.

Some patients develop warning signs as the fever begins to settle. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, unusual drowsiness, or difficulty breathing require urgent medical evaluation.

If dengue is suspected, consult a doctor for appropriate testing and monitoring. Avoid self-medication with aspirin or ibuprofen because these medicines can increase bleeding risk in dengue.

2. Malaria

Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Symptoms may include fever, chills, sweating, headache, body aches, and tiredness.

The fever pattern is not always regular, so it is unsafe to rule out malaria simply because the person does not experience typical chills. Early testing and appropriate treatment are important because malaria can sometimes become severe.

Anyone experiencing fever after mosquito exposure or travel to a malaria-risk area should seek medical advice.

3. Typhoid Fever

Typhoid is a bacterial infection that can spread through contaminated food and water. It may cause prolonged fever, weakness, headache, stomach discomfort, loss of appetite, and changes in bowel habits.

Safe drinking water, proper handwashing, and hygienic food preparation help reduce the risk of infection. If typhoid is suspected, a doctor may recommend appropriate tests and antibiotics when indicated. Do not take antibiotics without medical advice.

4. Other Seasonal Infections

Not every fever during the rainy season is caused by dengue, malaria, or typhoid. Viral infections, respiratory illnesses, and other bacterial infections can also cause fever.

The symptoms of different infections can overlap. Therefore, it is important not to guess the cause based only on symptoms or take medicines recommended for someone else. A doctor can assess the symptoms and decide whether tests are required.

Why You Should Never Ignore a High Fever During the Monsoon: Warning Signs

A high fever should not be ignored, particularly when it is persistent, worsening, or associated with other symptoms. Early medical assessment can help identify the cause and reduce the risk of delayed treatment.

Watch for the following warning signs:

  • Fever that persists or keeps returning.

  • Severe headache or intense body pain.

  • Repeated vomiting or severe abdominal pain.

  • Bleeding from the nose or gums, or blood in vomit or stool.

  • Difficulty breathing or chest pain.

  • Confusion, fainting, unusual drowsiness, or difficulty waking up.

  • Very little urine, extreme thirst, or other signs of dehydration.

Seek emergency medical care if the person has difficulty breathing, altered consciousness, significant bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or signs of shock. Do not delay care while waiting for the temperature to rise further.

Infants, older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immunity or chronic medical conditions may need earlier medical assessment. A baby younger than three months with a temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or above needs urgent medical evaluation.

What Should You Do If You Develop a High Fever During the Monsoon?

Taking the right steps can help you stay safer while arranging medical care.

1. Consult a doctor: Seek medical advice for a high, persistent, or worsening fever. Your doctor may recommend blood tests or other investigations depending on your symptoms and the suspected infection.

2. Drink safe fluids: Drink clean water and other suitable fluids regularly. If vomiting or diarrhoea causes fluid loss, oral rehydration solution may be helpful. Seek medical care if you cannot keep fluids down.

3. Get adequate rest: Avoid strenuous activity and allow your body to recover. Monitor your temperature and note any new symptoms.

4. Avoid self-medication: Do not start antibiotics or take multiple fever medicines without professional advice. If dengue is possible, avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless a doctor specifically advises otherwise. Ask a healthcare professional about a suitable fever medicine and dose.

5. Follow medical advice: Complete prescribed treatment as directed and attend follow-up appointments if recommended. Do not stop treatment just because the fever has reduced.

How Can You Prevent Monsoon-Related Infections?

Prevention is an important part of staying healthy during the rainy season. Although no precaution can prevent every infection, simple habits can reduce certain risks.

  • Drink clean, safe water and avoid food prepared in unhygienic conditions.

  • Wash your hands before eating and after using the toilet.

  • Keep food covered and eat freshly prepared meals.

  • Prevent mosquito breeding by emptying stagnant water from coolers, containers, pots, and other items.

  • Use suitable mosquito repellents and wear clothing that reduces exposed skin.

  • Keep your surroundings clean and dispose of waste properly.

  • Seek medical advice promptly if you develop a fever or other concerning symptoms.

Conclusion

A high fever during the rainy season should never be taken lightly. Dengue, malaria, typhoid, and other infections can cause similar symptoms, making medical assessment important for identifying the actual cause.

Pay attention to warning signs, drink safe fluids, get adequate rest, and avoid self-medication. Seek prompt medical advice for a high or persistent fever, and get emergency care if severe symptoms develop. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help reduce the risk of complications and support a safer recovery during the monsoon.
